Israeli Sabotage of Hamas-Fatah Reconciliation

By Abdel Bari Atwan

The issue of sabotaging the national reconciliation between Fatah and HAMAS movements and the resulting formation of a consensus government led by Dr Rami al-Hamdallah occupies the most prominent rank among the Israeli objective, which stands behind the current aggression against the Gaza Strip, which has resulted in the martyrdom of more than 2,000 people, one quarter of whom are children, in addition to the wounding of 10,000 others, and the destruction of tens of thousands of houses. Hence, it was not a surprise to us, and after the failure of this aggression to achieve this objective, i.e. sabotaging the reconciliation, that the Israeli intelligence services try to sow sedition between the two sides of the Palest! inian political equation by announcing the arrest of 93 HAMAS activists in the West Bank last May who planned for a coup against the Palestinian [National] Authority and launch attacks on Tel Aviv.

Ofir Gendelman, spokesman for Israeli Prime Minister Benyamin Netanyahu, wrote down a tweet on his Twitter account saying that “a HAMAS’s cell of 93 members was arrested and it had planned to stage a coup against the Palestinian [National] Authority, seize the West Bank, and launch terrorist attacks against Israel that would have destabilized the West Bank,” while the Israeli radio quoted the Israel Security Agency, the Shabak, as saying that “an M-16 rifle, pistols, and rocket launchers were seized in addition to large quantities of ammunition and a sum of 6,000 shekels (1,700 dollars), a car, and a house in the village of Al-Awjah, near the city of Jericho, which have been prepared for terrorist purposes.”

The choice of this timing to unveil the alleged cell ! and the emphasis that Khalid Mish’al, head of HAMAS’s Political Bureau, was aware of it, and that Riyad Nasir, its leader, has been recruited by Salih al-Aruri, one of HAMAS’s leaders who is residing in Turkey – all these factors together confirm that there is an Israeli plan to assassinate the two, i.e. Mish’al and Al-Aruri together on the charge of involvement in this operation.

Prominent leaders in the hardline Israeli right, some of whom are parliament members, have called for the assassination of Mish’al and sending a commando group to Doha, where he is staying, to liquidate him physically due to his leadership of HAMAS and for his blessing of the missile attacks which it was launching on the Israeli settlements to the north of the Gaza Strip. It is not a strange that involving the name of the man in the alleged cell is a prelude to this liquidation operation, and we should remember that Netanyahu was a prime minister when the attempt to assassinate Mish’al took place by a Mosad cell in the Jordanian capital, Amman, 15 years ago.

It is a cheap attempt and with a bad setup and cannot convince the most naive one because is it logical that this cell overthrows the Authority in Ramallah and controls the West Bank using six pistols, an M-16 rifle, and seven rocket launchers, and $1,700? With full naivete we ask that if this cell was apprehended last May, why then the announcement of this took place at least three months later and during the Israeli aggression on the Gaza Strip and the formation of a unified delegation to negotiate on ending it through an Egyptian mediation in Cairo?

Israel is not just a failed state in its aggression against a small strip of land such as the Gaza Strip and defeating the resistance factions defending it, but also it failed in the media and political fabrications and also in the psychological warfare because this plan it announced has badly been fabricated and produced at the same time. In spite of this, we should point out that in light of the state of defeat an! d breakage which Netanyahu’s government is experiencing and the confusion that results from it, full alert should be heeded particularly concerning possible assassination operations against Hamas leaders to make up for the ugly defeat inflicted on them in Gaza.
