John Kerry’s breakneck 10-day journey round the Middle East, North Africa and even Poland appears to be a desperate attempt to cover all bases as the region’s political paradigm undergoes seismic shifts.

The balance of power in the Middle East used to be straightforward.

The first day of Mohammad Morsi’s trial in Cairo yesterday would have been pure comedy were it not for the fact that a nation’s judicial system is a perfect indicator of the nature of the ruling regime and should, therefore, always be taken seriously.

In the course of the two hour session the procedure was turned on its head and the Military Junta, the privately-owned media and the Egyptian legal system,  found themselves  in the dock rather than the elected President, Morsi, who was standing trial for inciting murder.

John Kerry, US Secretary of State became the highest ranking American official to visit Egypt since July’s coup which ousted President Morsi.

Following a meeting with Foreign Minister, Nabil Fahmy, Kerry told a press conference that Egypt was on the ‘march towards democracy’ (was the choice of this military terminology deliberate?) and that the junta ‘has made very important statements about the roadmap and is now engaged in implementing those steps’

What exactly is Kerry’s diplomatic mission in Cairo?

Last year, the Syrian regime’s mouthpiece, Baath newspaper, described UN peace envoy Lakhdar Brahimi as ‘an aging tourist’ and a false mediator. Yesterday, however, it was full of praise for the ‘expert’ and his ‘experience’ after a meeting between Assad and Brahimi in Damascus. Brahimi has been touring the region drumming up support for Geneva 2.

Also this week, there have been hints that Washington is tiring of the Syrian National Council’s (SNC) intransigence in refusing to attend Geneva 2 if Assad’s departure is not a guaranteed pre-condition.

It is hard to believe the  Syrian regime’s official version regarding that sacking of deputy Prime Minister Qadri Jamil on Tuesday.

In a notice posted on Syrian state television, the explanation offered was that Jamil acted without government permission when he traveled to Geneva and met US officials last weekend. ‘Jamil was dismissed because he left his centre of work without prior permission and … undertook activities outside the nation without coordinating with the government,’ the notice said.

Finally waking up from its coma, the Arabic League has decided to invite the Foreign Ministers of member countries to an emergency summit to discuss the Syrian crisis.

This call to action followed a meeting between UN envoy Lakhdar Brahimi and  Ahmed Ben Hilli, Deputy Secretary General of the Arab League about the forthcoming Geneva 2 conference.

Saudi Foreign Minister Saud Al-Faisal refused to give his speech the United Nations General Assembly earlier this month, and rejected a two-year rolling membership of the Security Council on behalf of his country in protest, as he said, at the UN’s failure to support the Syrian people, solve the Palestinian issue and rid the region of weapons of mass destruction.

The UN-Arab League envoy, Lakhdar Brahimi, is in Damascus today – the climax of an intensive diplomatic tour to drum up support for the so-called Geneva 2 talks aimed at solving the Syrian crisis.

Brahimi will meet Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and his foreign minister Walid al-Muallem. The last time Brahimi met Assad was in December 2012; in January 2013 he announced that Assad would have no place in the envisaged interim government to end the civil war.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel is known for her cool nerves, restraint and muted emotions but even she was visibly rattled when it was revealed that US National Security Agency (NSA) had been spying on her and recording her mobile calls, emails and text messages. She immediately contacted President Obama administration demanding clarification and, in a 20 minute telephone conversation, made her displeasure clear. The American ambassador in Berlin was called to account by the German foreign minister, Guido Westerwelle.

On Tuesday, the foreign ministers of the remaining (down to eleven from 114) Friends of Syria nations held a meeting in London. They must have considered not only where they can go with their mission in the light of various diplomatic and military developments, but also if it is still appropriate for them to operate under their current moniker.

To explain: there are actually two international groups who call themselves friends of Syria. The first supports the Assad regime and consists of the Russian Federation, China, Iran and Hezbollah; the second supports the opposition and consists of Egypt, France, Germany, Italy, Jordan, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, the United Arab Emirates, the United Kingdom and the United States of America.
